Promoter Paul Loasby’s idea to promote Rainbow marked the birth of the “Monsters of Rock” festival in 1980. Seven bands (amongst others Judas Priest and the Scorpions) from within the heavy rock and metal genre, headlined by Rainbow were the first line-up of the festival. The “Monsters of Rock” era had begun.
The Donington Park motor racing circuit at Castle Donington, Leicestershire was chosen for its capacity to hold up to 100,000 people and its easy access to major transport links near to the industrial Midlands.
The Monsters of Rock festival was a one day festival that lasted from 1980-1997, with a few interruptions. Rainbow, Judas Priest, Scorpions, April Wine, Saxon, Riot and Touch were part of the first festival line-up.
Iron Maiden hold the record for most headline appeareces at Donington Park – four. Previously the record of three was held by AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica. However it should be noted that Ozzy Osbourne also appeared with Black Sabbath in 2005 and that Ozzfest/Escape from the Studio ’95 (Metallica) were not part of the main Monsters of Rock/Download festival series.
In 1988 two music fans were accidentally crushed to death during Guns ‘N’ Roses performance, they died because of a combination of the people at the front of the 107,000 strong audience moshing and slipping in the mud in conjunction with a sudden surge to see the band. For this reason the 1989 festival was cancelled.
British hard rock music declined in the early 90s, grunge took over and with the late 90s rise of pop the genre was further pushed in the back, Monsters of Rock had been forced to stop in 1996. However, the tradition of festivals at Donington Park was held up; in 2001 the “Rock and Blues Festival” was the first 2-day festival at Donington.
With hard rock recovering, Live Nation resurrected the festival under the new (and for that time rebellious) name “Download Festival”. The festival now lasts tree days and is getting bigger and better every year. 1980 only seven bands were performing, nowadays there are five stages with up to ten bands performing on them per day.
In 2011 the System of a Down and Linkin Park will headline the Download Festival.

ATTENTION: To view what is, essentially, an extended version of this, watch the video for my new album Recovery: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6hx6SJIMfA
NOTE: I honestly could not care less if some of these bands/songs don’t fit your definition of “pop punk.” Pop Punk means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Are all of these bands pop punk? No. Switchfoot? You gotta be kidding me. Rise Against? Barely, if at all. As you can see in the opening sequence, the title of this mashup is Middle School. but I decided on “42 Song Pop Punk Mashup” as the title for this video to get more traffic. Is that dishonest? Almost. Do I care? 1,000,000+ views say I really don’t care at all. So please just save yourself the effort of trying to tell me what I already know.
2:25 AM, November 20, 2014: One Million views. I can never thank you enough.
